Celebrating Punjab’s three biggest melas

April 18, 2022
Lakhs of devotees visit the three biggest melas of Punjab every year. The celebrations of Shaheedi Jor Mela at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, Hola Mohalla at Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Maghi Mela at Sri Muktsar Sahib usually extend across a period of three days each. These melas hold tremendous significance and value in the hearts of the community, thus witnessing a very high footfall at each event.

For those who are unaware, Shaheedi Jor Mela is held in the memory of younger 'Sahibzadas' of Sri Guru Gobind Singh - Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh along with Mata Gujari Kaur. Hola Mohalla is organised to highlight the essence of the Sikh community's bravery to the world. Maghi Mela is held in the memory of the 40 Muktas or the liberated ones, who laid down their lives while fighting the Mughals.

Due to the pandemic-stricken scenario, hundreds of devotees were kept from attending the holy festival. When all hope seemed to be lost, team Jio came up with the objective of ensuring a true 4G experience at these events, thereby making it possible for devotees to attend the melas virtually from the comfort of their homes.

The journey of creating digital experiences for the devotees started with a host of initiatives to meet the various data requirements at the melas. To provide a true Digital India with enhanced 4G experiences, and serve lakhs of devotees who converged at the three biggest melas of Punjab, team Jio actively facilitated the following:
  • Set up multiple special 'Sewa kendras' with Wi-fi zones across the towns to seamlessly assist and actively engage the devotees.
  • Rapidly augment 4G network by installing temporary Cells on wheels (COW) sites to ensure uninterrupted voice and data connectivity.
  • Created dedicated Wi-Fi zones to assist thousands of devotees to perform various urgent online tasks seamlessly.
Team Jio provided multiple onsite services to all the devotees that included resolving various SIM related issues, providing new SIM connections, facilitating porting requests from other networks to Jio, recharging their existing numbers, and more. Uninterrupted data, high quality of network, call and SMS offered by Jio was followed by a large number of customers porting their numbers to Jio during as well as after the celebrations.

Despite the rapid increase in data and calling traffic on Jio's network during this period, team Jio at Punjab went above and beyond their call of duty to ensure a seamless 4G Digital experience for devotees thus delivering on its promise of a Digital Life! Digitising four melas with a very high footfall was no mean feat. Thanks to the relentless effort and determination of team Jio, it was possible for hundreds of devotees to attend the celebrations.
