Introducing 4G to Meghalaya’s Jair village

January 9, 2023
70 km from the city of Shillong, lies Jair village, a quaint community of indigenous people residing in the Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. This small hamlet lay isolated and remote due to a lack of technology and infrastructure, thus depriving its residents of connectivity and digital opportunities.

With the objective of bringing modern technology, information, and connectivity, the residents of Jair reached out to team Jio to digitally transform the hamlet. Team Jio collaborated with the Department of Telecommunications [DoT], North-East to install a 4G Base Transceiver Station [BTS] in the village. Recently, the BTS was inaugurated by Jio and DoT.

Since the installation of Jio's BTS tower, over 700 villagers of Jair and more than 1200 residents of nearby villages such as Lamalong, Sonidon, Mawbri Makaleng, Pamphlang and Umkra are finally experiencing services like seamless communication, high-speed wireless internet connectivity, and much more.

The connectivity provided by this BTS will empower the youth of the village such as Brickwell, a 30-year-old farmer, who is now looking forward to leveraging the internet to access new farming techniques, knowledge of improved seeds, fertilizers, and pest control to increase productivity. It is especially encouraging to school-goers who can now access the internet and receive the best educational materials.

The installation of the 4G BTS site of Jio is another step forward in the journey of a rapidly progressing India and a testimony to the 'Digital Life' promise made by Jio. This digital connectivity will facilitate better delivery of citizen-centric initiatives through e-governance, e-health, online education, promotion of tourism and e-commerce which will improve the quality of life of the villagers.
